Coil-on-Plug Instead of Distributor
With the Coil-on-Plug conversion you replace the central ignition coil plus distributor and ignition cables on the M102 16V with four individual ignition coils directly on the spark plugs. Each cylinder gets its own coil and its own spark.
What the Conversion Brings
- Sequential ignition: each coil is triggered individually.
- More control when tuning: ignition timing and charge time can be set more finely per cylinder.
- A strong, stable spark up into high rpm, without the dropout of the old distributor ignition.
- Less load on the chain drive and engine, because the drive for the ignition distributor is omitted.
- No more distributor and no more ignition cables, which takes wear and interference sources out of the engine bay.
These four ignition coils are one building block of the Coil-on-Plug conversion. For the full conversion to electronic injection you are best off taking the complete EFI conversion kit, which includes all the required components together.
On the 2.3-16 with simplex chain drive you can eliminate the distributor drive entirely and fit a lightweight intermediate shaft.
Compatibility
- 190E 2.3-16 (W201)
- 190E 2.5-16 (W201, incl. Evolution / Evo II)
Fits all M102 16V engines.
Note
The four ignition coils are part of a Coil-on-Plug conversion and do not replace a single original part. The remaining components of the conversion are required for operation. No registration is needed for the conversion.
